Senator ALSTON (Minister for Communications and the Arts) —Earlier today the Senate agreed to a motion moved by Senator Bourne for the production of correspondence held by my office or department which calls on the Australian government to take action concerning the ongoing services of Radio Australia and/or Australia Television. I table the correspondence in response to the order of the Senate. The tabled correspondence does not include four cables which report on views held by heads of government and foreign parliamentarians. The exclusion is on the basis that the normal continuing and friendly relations with other countries could be adversely affected if correspondence assumed to be confidential were released on request.
