Senator VANSTONE (Minister for Employment, Education, Training and Youth Affairs) —by leave—Yesterday in answering a question on Labor's contribution to increasing unemployment, I referred to the increase in net government debt as being from $17 billion in 1991 to $110 billion. That was the advice that I had been given by the Treasurer's office. It certainly is true that the debt has drastically increased, but this morning I was advised by the Treasurer's office that the net government debt figure for 1996 is $93 billion.

Australians can take no heart that it is not $110 billion but only $93 billion because $17 billion to $93 billion means that the point that was being made is perfectly valid. It is just that that figure should have read $110 billion rather than $93 billion.
