Senator STOTT DESPOJA —I give notice that, on the next day of sitting, I shall move:

That the Senate—

(a)   notes:

   (i)   reports on 28 May 1997 that one United States of America (US) pharmaceutical company's shares rose in value by 17 per cent following the announcement that it had gained the US patent for its oestrogen drug technology,

   (ii)   the leading role of Australian scientists in identifying the role of phytoestrogens, including isoflavonoids, in sheep infertility, and

   (iii)   the role of indigenous peoples in using phytoestrogenic substances for medicinal and other purposes; and

(b)   expresses concern that the diversity of ownership of pharmaceutical producers is being concentrated and this may not be in the best interests of consumers and sovereign States.
