Senator BOURNE —I give notice that, on the next day of sitting, I shall move:

That the Senate—

(a)   notes that:

   (i)   5 June 1997 is World Environment Day,

   (ii)   the Conference of Parties to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) will be meeting in Zimbabwe in June 1997,

   (iii)   amongst other proposals, CITES will be considering a proposal to lift the international trade ban on ivory from three countries, namely Namibia, Zimbabwe and Botswana, and

   (iv)   elephant ivory is being stockpiled in at least 27 countries in anticipation that a ban on the ivory trade will be lifted; and

(b)   calls on the Australian Government not to support the proposal to lift the international trade ban on ivory.
