Senator ALLISON —I give notice that, on the next day of sitting, I shall move:

That the Senate—

(a)   notes that:

   (i)   5 June 1997 is World Environment Day,

   (ii)   the New South Wales, South Australian, Queensland and Tasmanian Governments have moved to ban the fishing of the great white shark which was recently protected under various jurisdictions, and

   (iii)   the Victorian, Western Australian and Commonwealth Governments have so far failed to follow suit; and

(b)   calls on:

   (i)   the Victorian Government to protect the great white shark under the Flora and Fauna Guarantee Act and related fisheries legislation,

   (ii)   the Western Australian Government to protect the great white shark under fisheries legislation,

   (iii)   the Commonwealth Government to protect the great white shark under the Endangered Species Protection Act, and to designate shark meshing as a key threatening process under that Act, and

   (iv)   the Commonwealth Government to nominate the species for listing under Appendix I of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), by way of a postal vote, following the CITES conference in June 1997.
