That the Senate—

(a)   notes that:

   (i)   of logs taken out of East Gippsland's old-growth forests, about 85 per cent are pulped and 15 per cent are taken for milling,

(ii)   as the recovery rate is about 50 per cent, sawn timber product is as low as 7.5 per cent of extracted logs, and

(iii)   factoring in the 50 per cent biomass left on the forest floor to be burnt, about 3.5 per cent of old-growth forests total living mass is turned into sawn timber; and

(b)   calls on the Government to:

   (i)   stop this waste of Australia's old-growth forests,

(ii)   reduce the unsustainable rate of logging in East Gippsland forests and the conversion of native forests to shining gum plantations, and

(iii)   support the growing eco-tourism industry in East Gippsland.
