Senator BOURNE —I give notice that, on the next day of sitting, I shall move:

That the Senate—

(a)   notes:

   (i)   the election in Indonesia on 29 May 1997, and

   (ii)   that it is not a democratic election, because only Government approved parties are allowed to stand;

(b)   observes that this undemocratic process continues to enable human rights abuses, such as the continued abuse of the East Timorese people;

(c)   deplores the excessive use of force in Indonesia's dealing with political opposition; and

(d)   calls on the Government of Australia to condemn the human rights abuses in Indonesia and to welcome refugees from East Timor.
