Senator FAULKNER (Leader of the Opposition in the Senate)(6.14 p.m.) —I am very disappointed to hear the contribution from Senator Hill, but I cannot say that I am particularly surprised as the government lurches towards the conclusion of, without any doubt, the worst week it has had since its election. We now have Senator Hill and the government announce they are opposed, in effect, to motherhood. That is what you are saying, Senator Hill. This is a most extraordinary statement on your behalf.

I think we have just heard the words of an embittered man. He wants to get away to his dinner break I suspect. I am disappointed that you are opposed to motherhood. But, as I say, after your and Mr Howard's performance this week, I am not at all surprised—others may be. To all those listening to this debate I think it probably says it all—a most churlish final contribution from Senator Hill, and he stands condemned for it.
