Senator HILL (Minister for the Environment)(11.07 a.m.) —This program is not about in the main encouraging the expansion of crops. The very modest forestry program that is within it you can say is of that type, but that is only a very small fraction of the total fund. The natural vegetation initiative of some $318 million is to extend native vegetation cover primarily for the purpose of the environmental outcomes that most of us would like to see. There will be incidental benefits to agriculture because we believe that extending the native vegetation cover will enhance the productive capacities of the land. In other words, we think it will help restore basic health to the natural systems.
