Motion (by Senator Margetts) agreed to:

That the Senate—

(a)   notes that:

   (i)   the recent decision to relocate the Coode Island chemical storage facility to Point Lillias highlights the threats to Ramsar-listed wetlands in this country, and

(ii)   the Conservation Council of Western Australia produced a report on the management of Ramsar sites in Western Australia in July 1995 which concluded that most of the wetlands in Western Australia are also facing a high level of threat; and

(b)   calls on the Government to implement the recommendations of the report, which include recognising the urgent need for the development and implementation of management plans for all Ramsar-listed wetlands, the commitment of greater State and federal resources to the long-term management of these areas and the establishment of community advisory committees.
