Senator KEMP —Yesterday I tabled, on behalf of the Minister for Administrative Services and pursuant to a Senate order of 18 March 1997, details held by the department of travelling allowances paid to current and former senators. For the convenience of senators, a list was included which showed each senator and former senator for the period covered. This was a summary of the information on the individual schedules.

There were four transcription errors made in the preparation of the list relating to Senator Brownhill, Senator Tambling, Senator Faulkner and former senator Button. The Department of Administrative Services regrets the errors and has apologised to Senators Brownhill, Tambling and Faulkner and former senator Button. In addition, Senator Tate's initial claim covered the period from 20 December 1991. I table the amended list. Because I have been given letters of apology, I seek to incorporate those letters to Senators Brownhill and Tambling.

Senator Faulkner —What?

Senator KEMP —I seek to incorporate letters of apology, because they have been given to me. If you wish to pass—

Senator Faulkner —I just didn't hear what you said.

Senator KEMP —Sorry, John. I'll just wait until you are listening.

The PRESIDENT —Order! You should address the senator by his correct title.

Senator KEMP —I seek to incorporate letters of apology to Senators Brownhill and Tambling.

Senator Faulkner —What about me?

Senator KEMP —Well, pass me the letter, and I will put it in.

Senator Faulkner —I have not got a letter.

Leave granted.

The letters read as follows

Department of Administrative Services

Ministerial and Parliamentary Services Division

GPO Box 1920

CANBERRA ACT 2600

Senator the Hon David Brownhill

Senator for New South Wales

Parliament House

CANBERRA ACT 2600

Dear Senator Brownhill

I am writing to apologise that in the documents tabled yesterday outlining travelling allowance payments made by the department, the cover sheet showed the incorrect period covered by claims lodged by you.

The correct period and that shown in the individual table dealing with your claims was 11 March 1996 to 28 February 1997. Unfortunately the covering list showed the period as 11 March 1996 to 8 June 1996.

I am taking steps to have the corrected list tabled today.

The transcription error should not have occurred and is regretted. You will appreciate that the records had to be compiled in a very tight time-frame.

Yours sincerely

Senator the Hon Grant Tambling

CANBERRA ACT 2600

Dear Senator Tambling

I am writing to apologise that in the documents tabled yesterday outlining travelling allowance payments made by the department, the cover sheet showed the incorrect period covered by claims lodged by you.

The correct period and that shown in the individual table dealing with your claims was 11 March 1996 to 22 February 1997. Unfortunately the covering list showed the period as 4 August 1996 to 9 June 1996. The detailed statement of claims made by you of course included your travelling allowance usage from 11 March 1996.

I am taking steps to have the corrected list tabled today.

The transcription error should not have occurred and is regretted. You will appreciate that the records had to be compiled in a very tight time-frame.

Yours sincerely
