Senator FAULKNER (Leader of the Opposition in the Senate) —I give notice that, on the next day of sitting, I shall move:

That the Senate—

(a)   notes that:

   (i)   on 17 October 1995, the former Labor Senate President (Mr Beahan) outlined proposals for the tabling of all senators' travelling allowance details administered by the Department of the Senate,

(ii)   on 21 August 1996, the current President of the Senate (Senator Reid) wrote to party leaders and independent senators seeking their support for a continuation of this system of disclosure and accountability,

(iii)   on 21 August 1996, the Leader of the Opposition in the Senate (Senator Faulkner) replied to the President indicating his support for the annual tabling of all travel allowance details paid to senators,

(iv)   the Opposition continues to strongly support this practice,

   (v)   on 11 September 1996, details of all travelling allowance paid to senators in the 1995-1996 financial year were tabled in the Senate, and

(vi)   Senator Colston has now given notice that he will move that all travel allowance documents of all senators be tabled in the Senate; and

(b)   finds Senator Colston's conversion to disclosure and accountability on travel allowances extraordinary given his earlier views, as evidenced by his question on notice to the President of the Senate, on 2 May 1996, asking if the views of the Privacy Commissioner had been sought in relation to the tabling of travel allowance payments to chairs and members of committees.
