Senator STOTT DESPOJA —I give notice that, on the next day of sitting, I shall move:

That the Senate—

(a)   notes that:

   (i)   the Department of Social Security set up the Employer Contact Unit, dubbed the `dob-in-a-dole-bludger' hotline, which received 13 862 calls between May 1996 and February 1997, of which only 200 were calls dobbing in so-called dole cheats, and

   (ii)   the head of the department accepts that there is no basis for the commonly held belief that fraud is rampant in the social security system; and

(b)   expresses concern that:

   (i)   such hotlines were set up without evidence of rampant fraud, and

   (ii)   the Government is perpetuating the myth of rampant social security fraud in the community.
