(Question No. 198)

Senator Margetts asked the Minister representing the Minister for Transport and Regional Development, upon notice, on 17 September 1996:

With reference to the answers to question on notice nos 2066 and 2091 (Senate Hansard , 19 June 1995, pp 1380 and 1395) and, in particular, to the former Minister's statement that the extensions are being constructed on ground well above the Hannans Lake water course and the relevant WA Government authorities are aware of the findings of KCGM's [Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines Pty Ltd] hydro-geological study:

(1) Can a copy be provided of the complete hydro-geological study referred to above.

(2) What is the current ground water level in metres below ground level in monitoring bores 1, 2, 3 and 4, as detailed on the tabled map.

(3) Can all the sampling results from the monitoring bores/production seepage recovery bores and interceptor trenches since they were first installed be supplied; if not, why not.

Senator Alston —The Minister for Transport and Regional Development has provided the following answer to the honourable senator's question:

(1) The Commonwealth and the Australian National Railways Commission (AN) do not hold this document. Any request for a copy of the study should be directed to KCGM or the Western Australian Department of Environmental Protection.

(2) AN has advised that since the tabled map was prepared four more monitoring bores have been installed. When measured on 11 October 1996 water levels in the bores ranged from approximately two to 14 metres from the surface.

(3) AN does not possess these results.
