That the Senate—

(a)   notes:

   (i)   the report of the study in the Canberra Times of 17 October 1996 about child poverty in Australia,

(ii)   that Australia has the second worst level of child poverty in the industrialised world,

(iii)   that the study, by the Bread for the World organisation which was issued to coincide with World Food Day, stated that the poverty rate for Australian children was 14.1 per cent, worse than any other industrialised nation except the United States of America where it is 21.5 per cent, and

(iv)   that according to the study, 20 per cent of Aboriginal children in the Northern Territory under the age of two were malnourished and the Aboriginal infant mortality rate was three times that of the nation as a whole; and

(b)   calls on the Government to implement real programs to alleviate this shocking situation.
