Senator PATTERSON —I give notice that, on the next day of sitting, I shall move:

That the Senate—

(a)   notes that the week beginning 20 October 1996 is National Carers Awareness Week, a week which aims to support and recognise the work and needs of carers and to improve community understanding of what they do;

(b)   recognises that almost 2 million people look after someone who has an illness, is frail or elderly, or who has a physical, mental or intellectual disability;

(c)   acknowledges the hard work that carers put in everyday and the invaluable contribution they make to the people they care for as well as society in general;

(d)   recognises that, without the help of carers, many of the most dependent and vulnerable people in our community would find it difficult to continue living at home; and

(e)   supports the Federal Government in its commitment to carers through the National Carer Action Plan which has and will continue to support carers, ease the pressure of their caring responsibilities, enable them to utilise respite care services more, and give them greater flexibility to work and to undertake education and training.
