Senator PANIZZA
—I give notice that, on the next day of sitting, I shall move:
That the Senate—
(a) notes:
(i) the concerns raised by grain growers of Australia and other groups concerned with soil conservation, at the action of Monsanto in taking an anti-dumping action against the importation of glyphosate from China,
(ii) that this action, if successful, could increase the cost of farm chemicals to grain growers of Australia by 100 per cent, back to a figure previous to glyphosate coming out of patent, and
(iii) that, if this action is successful, it will set a precedent for any agricultural chemical coming out of patent to have the same treatment and so a pseudo-extension of the patent; and
(b) expresses concern at the possible blow-out in input costs to the important Australian grain industry, as well as to the cause of land care, because of the importance of glyphosate in minimum tillage.
