Senator ABETZ
—I give notice that, on the next day of sitting, I shall move:
That the Senate—
(a) notes:
(i) that Australian taxpayers face a damage bill in excess of $300 000 resulting from the riot at Parliament House, Canberra, on 19 August 1996,
(ii) the revelation from Joint House Department officials that they have received an estimate of $218 000, for repairs to the front brass ceremonial doors of Parliament House alone,
(iii) costs previously confirmed that other damage has been assessed at $91 000,
(iv) that other unquantifiable costs include the loss of business to the Parliament House Gift Shop, sick and stress leave for the security services and other Parliament House staff, and the damage to Canberra's international reputation as a tourist destination, and
(v) that there is still no indication from the union movement that it will accept any financial or moral responsibility for the riot and the damage it has caused; and
(b) calls on the leadership of the union movement to accept responsibility for the riot and the damage caused and apologise to all Australians.
