Senator CALVERT(11.24 a.m.) —I will just make an observation about this particular matter the government has brought forward. Senator Margetts was talking about landcare, so I will just give an example of what the benefit may be for one particular industry in my state of Tasmania—and I think Senator Cook would know this.

Due to pressure from the Greens movement in Tasmania, a place called Benders Quarry, where they used to mine limestone for the fruit industry in the Huon Valley, was closed. Therefore, because that was closed mainly due to pressures from the Greens, the limestone had to be imported from the north of the state because the alternative mine at Maydena could not be used because the Greens would not allow a road to go through from the Huon to Maydena.

At least now those fruit growers who have been suffering a great disadvantage will be able to use lime again to a greater extent on their fruit, on their apples. As you would know, lime is a very important ingredient they need. If this bill to reduce the price of lime will not assist landcare, I do not know what will. As I understand it, to turnaround now and make it wider is a little irresponsible financially, given the state our finances are in at the moment.
