Senator BOURNE —I give notice that, on the next day of sitting, I shall move:

That the Senate—

(a)   notes that:

   (i)   5 June 1996 is World Environment Day,

   (ii)   due to sewage disposal, unacceptable levels of E. coli are found in many coastal areas of Australia according to the National Health and Medical Research Council of Australia's guidelines for recreational water use, and

   (iii)   the technology exists to ensure that only clean water is returned to water systems; and

(b)   calls on the Government to demonstrate a real commitment to the environment by having national guidelines for water pollution and for rehabilitation of our rivers and coasts.
