Senator MARGETTS
—I give notice that, on the next day of sitting, I shall move:
That the Senate—
(a) notes:
(i) with concern, reports that the Government is proposing to cut annual funding for the Peace Research Centre from the foreign affairs budget,
(ii) with concern, similar reports that the annual funding, through the Department of Defence, of the Strategic and Defence Studies Centre of the Australian National University (ANU) will be maintained,
(iii) with concern, the refusal of the Government to cut the defence budget when the preventative work of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade is integral to reducing reactive expenditure by Defence, and
(iv) the internationally-reputed work of the Peace Research Centre in developing notions of cooperative security, preventative diplomacy, approaches to peacekeeping and non-military solutions to conflict; and
(b) calls on the Government to:
(i) maintain funding to the ANU's Peace Research Centre at existing levels,
(ii) reverse its stated decision to quarantine cuts from the Department of Defence, and
(iii) review its priorities with regard to the work of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the Department of Defence.
