Senator CHAMARETTE —I give notice that, on the next day of sitting, I shall move:

That the Senate—

(a)   expresses grave concern over the recent trial of democracy activist Wei Jingsheng in the People's Republic of China;

(b)   notes that:

   (i)   the trial lasted only 1 day, and

   (ii)   Wei Jingsheng was sentenced to 14 years in prison; and

(c)   calls on the Australian Government:

   (i)   to establish a dialogue with the Government of the People's Republic of China on human rights as a matter of urgency, and

   (ii)   to make representations to the Government of the People's Republic of China seeking Wei Jingsheng's release.
