Senator COOK (Minister for Industry, Science and Technology and Minister Assisting the Prime Minister for Science) —During the debate on Taxation Laws Amendment Bill (No. 4) on 24 March this year, I agreed to ask the Attorney-General (Mr Lavarch) to re-examine the application of section 53 of the constitution concerning the Senate's authority to amend proposed laws relating to a proposed charge or burden. I now have a copy of a letter from the Attorney-General to the Hon. George Gear MP, Assistant Treasurer, dealing with this matter, and I hereby table it.
