The Clerk —Pursuant to standing order 13, I advise the Senate that the President is absent leading the Australian delegation to the Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference in Banff, Canada, and the Deputy President will take the chair.

  The DEPUTY PRESIDENT (Senator Crichton-Browne) thereupon took the chair, and read prayers.

  Motion (by Senator Gareth Evans)—by leave—agreed to:

(1)That, during the absence of the President from 29 September to 16 October 1994, the Deputy President shall, on each sitting day, take the Chair of the Senate and may, during such absence, perform the duties and exercise the authority of the President in relation to all proceedings of the Senate and proceedings of committees to which the President is appointed.

(2)That the President be granted leave of absence for the period from 10 to 13 October 1994.
