asked the Minister for Defence, upon notice, on 23 August 1994:
(1) How many Indonesian military personnel have been trained on Australian soil during the 1991-92, 1992-93 and 1993-94 financial years.
(2) (a) What is the nature of the training of this personnel; (b) what are the names and positions of the personnel trained; and (c) which military college or institution provided that training.
(3) How many Indonesian military personnel have been trained by Australians on Indonesian soil during the 1991-92, 1992-93 and 1993-94 financial years.
(4) (a) What is the nature of the training of this personnel; and (b) what are the names and positions of the personnel trained.
Senator Robert Ray
—The answer to the honourable senator's question is as follows:
(1) The number of Indonesian military personnel trained in Australia over the last three financial years is:
1991-92 52
1992-93 89
1993-94 120
(2) (a) The nature of the training provided to Indonesian personnel has been largely the same over the last three financial years and has fallen into the following broad areas: professional military skills; technical skills; officer development; management; language training; and training techniques.
(b) I do not propose to reveal the names and positions of particular individuals trained in Australia.
(c) The training outlined at 2 (a) above was conducted by various single service training units as well as staff colleges and other academic institutions.
(3) The number of Indonesian armed forces personnel trained in Indonesia by Australian Defence Force (ADF) training teams in the last three financial years is:
1991-92 Nil
1992-93 56
1993-94 143
(4) (a) Indonesian armed forces personnel received training in professional military skills.
(b) I do not propose to reveal the names and positions of particular individuals trained in Indonesia by ADF personnel.
