Senator Campbell asked the Minister for Industry, Science and Technology, upon notice, on 7 June 1994:

  (1) How many square metres of office space are either leased, owned or occupied by the Department and its agencies.

  (2) What is the breakdown by State or Territory, and by department and agency, by State or Territory.

  (3) How many department and agency employees occupy the office space.

  (4) What is the breakdown by State or Territory, and by department and agency, by State or Territory.

  (5) Does the department lease or own any office space which is not currently occupied by staff; if so, please supply details of: (a) whether the office space is leased or owned; (b) whether it is leased/owned by the department or one of its agencies; (c) how many square metres are involved and the location of the office space (please specify whether details of these office space properties are included in the answers to any of the above questions).

  The four properties are owned by Australian Estate Management. Notional leases on each of these properties expired on 30 June 1994. ACS no longer has a need to provide a Customs service from these particular locations and the staffing was withdrawn. All four properties are included in the answer to the above questions.

  The Australian Customs Service response includes rent free office accommodation totalling 9,073 square metres which accommodates 846 staff members. The response excludes special purpose and storage space (Computer Centres, Detector Dog Units, Marine Centres etc) totalling 32,780 which accommodates 173 staff members.

  The Corporation does not lease or own any office space, however it is an occupant of part of the space leased by AIDC Ltd. The following answers refer to the total office space leased by AIDC Ltd.

  (EFIC owns Export House in Sydney, its office headquarters. This building was purchased in July 1977. Of a total space of 6 725 square metres, EFIC currently occupies 3 157 square metres; a further 2 305 square metres is to be leased (subject to the signing of an agreed lease in July 1994). The remaining 1 263 square metres will be taken up by EFIC in the following year to accommodate an increase in EFIC staff. EFIC also leases 848 square metres in other States.)
