Senator REID —I seek leave to incorporate in Hansard a motion passed yesterday by the Joint Select Committee on Certain Family Law Issues.

  Leave granted.

  The motion read as follows

29.06.94

The Joint Select Committee on Certain Family Law Issues—

(a)  notes—

(i)that the chairman of the committee had discussions with Cheryl Critchley on or about 9 June 1994 and with Sue Dunlevy on or about 21 June 1994 on the subject of the committee's inquiry into the Child Support Scheme.

(ii)that the discussions resulted respectively in the publication on 11 June 1994 of an article by Cheryl Critchley in the Melbourne Herald-Sun and on 22 June 1994 of an article by Sue Dunlevy in the Sydney Daily Telegraph Mirror.

(ii)that the articles refer to what are said to be or appear to be recommendations in the draft report under consideration by the committee.

(iv)that the chairman of the Committee denies canvassing the recommendations of the draft report with the journalists.

(b)expresses the opinion that neither any disclosure of any part of the draft report that may have resulted in the publication of the articles nor the publication of the articles actually causes substantial interference with the work of the Committee.

(c)expresses concern that the chairman has provided the occasion for aspects of the draft report under consideration by the Committee to be referred to or speculated upon publicly.

(d)recommends that, except for this resolution being reported to the House and to the Senate, no further action be taken.
