Senator CROWLEY —Senator Patterson today asked if the white paper had created a supposed anomaly in that a family with one earner of $300 gets less in social security payments than a family with two earners, each on $150. The answer to Senator Patterson's question is that the white paper has created no such anomaly. The situation described by Senator Patterson has always been the case because each member of a couple has access to a free area. This acknowledges the additional costs of two people going to work as compared to one, and encourages work force participation by both members of a couple. The white paper has ensured that individuals and families are better off from working additional hours.
