Senator Calvert asked the Minister for Defence, upon notice, on 16 March 1994:

  (1) What was accommodation costing $24,000 and $12,000 at Mollymook Shores Resort used for by the Human Resource and Management, Training and Development Branch.

  (2) How many people attended this session at Mollymook Shores Resort.

  (3) For what period of time did they stay at the resort.

  (4) What other costs were associated with this session, including travelling allowance, session organiser/trainer, et cetera.

  (5) What level were the officers involved in the training.


Senator Robert Ray —The answer to the honourable senator's question is as follows:

  (1) The figures of $12,000 and $24,000 represent Purchase Orders raised to cover the cost of conference facilities and accommodation used to conduct three Management Workshops for Senior Executives and Senior Officers within the Strategy and Intelligence Program.

  The actual costs of the first two workshops were $9,728.85 and $9,516.60, respectively. The third workshop covered by the purchase orders is to be held in May.

  (2) Twenty-six (26) people attended the November workshop. Twenty-five (25) people attended the March workshop. A similar number are scheduled to attend the May workshop.

  (3) The workshops commenced at 3.00 p.m. on Sunday afternoon and concluded at 3.00 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon; a total of 3 days, including evening sessions.

  (4) Other costs associated with the seminars were $42,420; covering the selection, by open tender, of a consultant to conduct the seminar program; the consultant's fees; and travel and incidental costs.

  (5) Seven Senior Executive Service (SES) members and 19 Senior Officers (SOs) attended the first workshop. Six SES and 19 SOs attended the second workshop.
