Senator IAN MACDONALD —I direct my question to the Minister for the Environment, Sport and Territories. Is the minister aware of the substandard buildings on the lawns across the road in front of the old Parliament House? Are those buildings legally erected and built to the required building standard and with all other relevant permits? If not, will the minister advise what action is being taken to remove the buildings and prosecute those responsible for their construction and maintenance?

Senator FAULKNER —I am aware of the buildings that Senator Macdonald has referred to. I understand that the question may be better directed to the Minister for Administrative Services, but I will undertake to respond to the specific questions raised by Senator Macdonald if there is any area of responsibility through my department. Otherwise, it seems more appropriate that I refer the question to the relevant minister.

Senator IAN MACDONALD —Mr President, I ask a supplementary question; I understand that it comes within the minister's portfolio as Minister for Territories. I ask that the minister get the National Capital Planning Authority to actually give a report on the buildings, on what action is proposed and on whether the authority is interested in getting rid of the buildings and, if so, whether the minister will give permission to do that. I understand that recommendations have been made to the minister in the past and I would ask that the minister accept those recommendations and authorise the authority to do something about them.

Senator FAULKNER —I have nothing further to add to my previous answer.
