Senator BOLKUS (Minister for Immigration and Ethnic Affairs and Minister Assisting the Prime Minister for Multicultural Affairs) (8.55 p.m.) —The government supports this amendment. I understand the opposition does as well. I may be technically out of order, but at this stage I would like to say that the government thanks Senator Vanstone for developing the concept of government amendment No. 14. Under the bill, responsibility for giving notice was left to the courts to determine. I gather that at the Senate standing committee hearings Senator Vanstone suggested that mandatory notification was preferable. The government supported her suggestion as a consequence. We moved amendment 14, so we thank her for her constructive input. Having said that, we now accept amendment 30, but I am sure Senator Vanstone wants the same latitude with standing orders.
