Senator VANSTONE (6.27 p.m.) —It might be worth mentioning, so that the Democrats understand our position, that we were sent a discussion paper by the Law Council which indicated that unless there was some flexibility in terms of passing the task on, the system might be clogged up.


Senator Spindler —Once should be enough, though.


Senator VANSTONE —We say once should be enough. I have not been in a law enforcement position. I am happy to rely on advice from people who have worked as serving police officers. I understand the government has got advice from the AFP in that respect. For that reason, and other practical ones—wanting one warrant to deal with a particular matter—we do not support what the Democrats wish to do. I think the Law Council has a good point.
