Senator WOODLEY —I give notice that, on the next day of sitting, I shall move:

  That the Senate—

  (a)notes that according to an article by Mr Peter Cotton, appearing in the recent ANU Reporter, researchers at the Australian National University:

    (i)believe that cereal producers could save millions of dollars per year by adopting some organic farming techniques,

    (ii)highlight that a partial adoption of organic farming methods would reduce chemical contamination of both agricultural environment and inland waterways and would benefit consumers through a reduction of chemicals in their food,

    (iii)estimate that organic farmers comprise only about half of one per cent of all wheat farmers in Australia; and

  (b)calls on the Government to provide financial and technical assistance to encourage all Australian farmers to adopt organic farming techniques.
