Senator COLLINS —During question time today Senator Chamarette sought some information about two particular coupes of forest in Tasmania—coupes 320A and 311D. The former Minister for Resources, Michael Lee, gave approval in December 1993 for the export of woodchips from coupes 320A and 311D in 1994. Both coupes were among those crowned forest coupes in national estate areas approved for logging operations in 1994 by Mr Lee. Mr Lee's approval to the renewal of woodchip licences for 1994 followed consideration of the environmental impact of woodchipping operations in native forests in line with his obligations under Commonwealth legislation. Neither Mr Lee nor the Minister for Resources, Mr Beddall, have approved expenditure of Helsham moneys for plantation establishments on coupe 320A or any other national estate site.
