(Question No. 1425)


Senator Brownhill asked the Minister representing the Minister for Defence, upon notice, on 14 October 1986:

(1) Has the environmental study of the Cobar region by the company, Dames and Moore, for the Department of Defence in relation to their land acquisition plans, been given a termination date; if so, when; if not why not.

(2) What monies have been allocated, for either development or further studies.

(3) How long does the Department of Defence intend to keep the people in the Cobar region waiting for a decision as to the future of their land.

(4) Is the Minister for Defence aware of the stress and personal and financial hardship of the people of Cobar caused by the Defence Department's studies of the area.


Senator Gareth Evans —The answer to the honourable senator's question is as follows:

(1) to (4) As announced by the Leader of the Government in the Senate on 5 December 1986, the Government has decided not to proceed with the proposal to establish an Army manoeuvre training area in the Cobar region.
