Senator Morris asked the Minister representing the Minister for Trade, upon notice, on 24 September 1986:

What is the estimate of expenditure to be made by the Australian Government concerning the America's Cup (a) directly; (b) by way of income tax foregone on donations to those promoting Cup defence; and (c) by way of income tax foregone on allowable expenditure for advertising, promotions and sponsorship connected with the Cup.

Senator Button —The Minister for Trade has provided the following answer to the honourable senator's question:

(a) $29.5 million is being made available to Western Australia for community facility and services projects related to the impact of the America's Cup defence. Any other direct expenditures are a matter for the relevant portfolios.

(b) and (c) The Commissioner of Taxation has advised that statistics that would enable an estimate to be made of the cost to revenue of allowing deductions in respect of donations to those promoting the America's Cup defence together with deductions for expenditure on advertising, promotions and sponsorship connected with the Cup are not available.
