Senator REID(9.56) —About $100,000 is allocated in this year's Budget to develop plans for this site. By developing that site land would be taken away from a whole range of semi-rural industries which are being developed in the Pialligo area, which are viable at present and which will not be so if the college goes ahead on the site. I could think of a whole number of sites in Canberra which would be suitable for the college. I know that students would have to go to the airport for certain things, but how often would they go to the airport? Why could they not travel from a site at Bruce to the airport and be nearer the other educational institutions? Why is the Department of Aviation determined to destroy the integrity of the Pialligo area by going ahead with the college in the area? If the Minister for Community Services (Senator Grimes) wants to leave it to another time to discuss, I am quite happy to do so but I want to know why the Government is prepared to spend so much more money developing the site because of the water problems that exist there rather than putting the same facilities somewhere else which would not cost nearly as much.
