Senator MICHAEL BAUME(9.26) —I would like to note that the Department of Aviation is the only Commonwealth department that found itself unable to find out the number and causes of invalidity retirements. Either the Department has been so diminished in terms of staffing or it is trying to make some quaint point that I do not understand, but I think it should explain itself.

Senator Puplick —And apologise.

Senator MICHAEL BAUME —Yes, as Senator Puplick says, and apologise. As the Department may be aware, a great deal of public comment has been made about the fact that in large elements of the Public Service there has been a greater tendency for people to retire through invalidity than to retire on reaching retirement age. The suggestion that this information is not readily available seems to me to be fairly quaint.
