(Question No. 1435)

Senator Kilgariff asked the Minister representing the Minister for Territories, upon notice, on 14 October 1986:

(1) What decision, if any, has been taken by the Federal Government in relation to the proposed upgrading of the airstrip on Christmas Island.

(2) Will such upgrading be done at Government expense, or is it proposed that the developers of tourist accommodation and the casino would pay for the upgrading of the airstrip.

Senator Gietzelt —The Minister for Territories has provided the following answer to the honourable senator's question:

(1) The Government has not made any decision to upgrade the Christmas Island airstrip, apart from normal maintenance.

(2) The proponent of the resort/hotel/casino development, Mr Frank Woodmore, has been advised that should any upgrading of the airstrip, the terminal or airport services be required to meet the needs of his development, he will be required to meet all costs, both capital and recurrent.
