(Question No. 1432)

Senator Kilgariff asked the Minister representing the Minister for Territories, upon notice, on 14 October 1986:

(1) What arrangements have been made for the construction of a cyclone-proof community centre on Home Island, in the Cocos (Keeling) Islands.

(2) When is it anticipated that this centre will be completed, and at what cost.

Senator Gietzelt —The Minister for Territories has provided the following answer to the honourable senator's question:

(1) The Government has approved a development plan for Home Island in the Cocos (Keeling) Islands, involving replacement of sub-standard housing and also the construction of a cyclone shelter/community centre.

The design of the cyclone shelter allows for a floor area of 1 sq. m per person for the current population in the main hall (415 square metres) plus a breezeway and office (total 158 square metres) to allow an area to accommodate future increases in population.

(2) Construction of the centre is due to commence in 1987/88 for completion in 1988/89 at an estimated cost of $1.1m.
