(Question No. 1196)

Senator Macklin asked the Minister for Resources and Energy, upon notice, on 11 June 1986:

(1) Is Total Mining Australia, the Western Australian Government, or any other body, planning to transport to any other place, either within Western Australia, any other State of Australia, or to any overseas destination, any of the contaminated plant, tailings and soil which resulted from the mining trials carried out at Manyingee in Western Australia.

(2) Is Total Mining Australia, or any other body, planning to dispose of the contaminated plant, tailings and soil, in international waters.

(3) If the Government is not aware of any such plans as mentioned in (1) and (2), could it seek an assurance from the relevant bodies, for example, Total Mining Australia and the Western Australian Government, that there are no such plans to dispose of this waste.

Senator Gareth Evans —The answer to the honourable senator's question is as follows:

(1) No.

(2) No.

(3) Total Mining Australia has assured the Government that there are no plans to dispose of waste in the manner referred to in questions 1 and 2 above.
