Senator WALTERS(3.51) —In the report of Estimates Committee B it was pointed out that the Committee was very concerned that the Department of Immigration and Ethnic Affairs was acting in breach of legislation. The Committee drew this fact to the attention of the Senate. It was pointed out that the number of freedom of information requests during the year was 1,554-an increase of 6 per cent over the previous year. During the year 1,150 requests were resolved of which 42 per cent were resolved within the required 45-day limit. We were concerned that 58 per cent of the requests remained unresolved in the required 45 days. What will the Department do about the fact that it is acting in breach of the legislation laid down by this Parliament?
