Senator JACK EVANS(10.34) —The Australian Democrats will not support the amendment. We believe that it is inappropriate to pick up an amendment like this which disburses $67.5m of funds. We would like to debate that disbursement in a considered manner. There are many other areas in which that $67.5m could be at least equally well spent and to interfere with the allocation of Government funds in this way on an amendment such as this is inappropriate. Perhaps after the Industries Assistance Commission inquiry has been completed, not only will the Government be in a better position to determine the fate of the proposal by the Opposition tonight, but so also will the Opposition and the Australian Democrats be in a better position to do so. An amendment such as this, taken on the run is inappropriate. Perhaps I could invite the Leader of the Opposition (Senator Chaney) to consider the position in the budget session when we look at allocations of scores of millions of dollars. At that time he might draw a more sympathetic response in a number of areas, including this one.

Question put:

That the amendment (Senator Chaney's) be agreed to.
