Senator GRIMES (Minister for Community Services)(4.58) —The facts as Senator Peter Rae puts them are correct, although I understand he has overstated, or Clyde Cameron has overstated, the number of officials who were present at the Estimates Committee hearing. I understand that the answer given at the Estimates Committee hearing was that Wendy McCarthy did get a stipend and that the officers present would find out how much she got. That question has been answered. The Bicentennial Authority is a company limited by guarantee which is composed of State and Federal elements. When Ms McCarthy, who, I must admit, seems to have raised great interest amongst Opposition Senators, was to be employed by that Authority, she raised the matter of her remuneration from the ABC with the Authority. As I understand it, the Authority raised it with the Public Service Board. As a result we have the situation which exists now. In the light of what Senator Peter Rae has said, I wonder what is the difference between someone who is employed in a private, legally limited company, who receives a similar stipend from the ABC, and Ms McCarthy. Is it just that the Opposition has a hang-up about Ms McCarthy?
