Senator PETER RAE(10.11) —That letter was published in response to a question asking whether any indication could be given as to why the efficiency audit of Australia Post, which began in June 1980, was not proceeding. The response was that the decision to discontinue the audit was advised to Mr McQuitty, Chief General Manager, Australian Postal Commission, in a letter of 7 February 1985 from the Auditor-General, Mr K. F. Brigden, and a copy of the letter was attached.

Is it not a fact that $500,000 worth of work had been done in relation to that efficiency audit before it was abandoned? If $500,000 is not the amount, can I have some indication of the value of the work which had been done in respect of Australia Post counter services efficiency audit? Why, having carried out that amount of work, was it decided that the audit would not be proceeded with after some 3 1/2 or four years?
