(Question No. 88)

Senator Macklin asked the Minister for Education, upon notice, on 20 March 1985:

(1) Has the committee which was established in 1984 to investigate and report on the establishment of new non-government schools submitted a draft report; if so, was the Australian Education Council the only group which had an opportunity to comment on the draft report and does this Council comprise only people associated with government schools.

(2) Will the non-government school sector have an opportunity to comment on the draft report before the Government adopts any recommendations.

Senator Ryan —The answer to the honourable senator's question is as follows:

(1) The Panel of Commonwealth Schools Commissioners appointed to investigate planning and funding policies for new non-government schools has now reported. In the course of undertaking its work the Panel held widespread consultations with both government and non-government school authorities and with groups representing various interests in the education sector. I also consulted with the Australian Education Council which comprises all the Ministers for Education in Australia.

(2) On 21 March 1985 I announced that the Government has accepted all recommendations included in the report of the Panel of Commonwealth Schools Commissioners.
