(Question No. 28)


Senator Colston asked the Minister representing the Minister for Communications, upon notice, on 22 February 1985:

Was a vehicle, registered number ZHM 755, used by Telecom on 23 January 1985, if so:

(a) was it being officially driven on the Gold Coast-Brisbane Highway between about 2pm and 2.30pm on 23 January 1985;

(b) Is it Telecom policy that:

(i) its drivers should show courtesy to other road users; and

(ii) Its vehicles be driven no faster than speed limits set by State authorities; and

(c) was there any valid reason for the vehicle being driven far in excess of the speed limit of 100 kph on this occasion.


Senator Walsh —The Minister for Communications has provided the following answer to the honourable senator's question based on advice from the Australian Telecommunications Commission:

Yes.

(a) Yes.

(b) (i) Yes. (ii) Yes.

(c) The driver concerned has stated to his supervisor that he is aware of Telecom's expectations regarding courtesy to other road users and observance of speed limits and cannot recall being discourteous to any other driver or exceeding the 100 kph speed limit on the return journey to Brisbane on 23 January 1985.
