Senator BUTTON (Minister for Industry, Technology and Commerce)(10.47) —As I indicated earlier, the Government does not accept the amendment. I did refer in my earlier comments to a number of qualifications on the Minister's power to give directions and I will reiterate those points. I would also like to indicate that I am quite prepared to give an undertaking to the Senate that insofar as any ministerial direction is required to be published forthwith in the Commonwealth of Australia Gazette, I will see that that direction-if there is any direction given while I am the Minister-is tabled in the Senate. If it is the wish of the Senate, we could look at the question of bringing back an amendment to include that provision. I do not want to do so today. I give the undertaking in respect of the tabling which the Senate Standing Committee for the Scrutiny of Bills has suggested; otherwise, I think the safeguards that I have referred to are appropriate.
