Senator MASON
—Mr President, I could not allow the occasion to pass without adding the thanks of the Australian Democrats for the presence of Senator Martin in this place. I think all honourable senators would agree that she has been an ornament to this chamber and a source of distraction to honourable senators during long and boring debates which we have on occasions. Also I should speak of Senator Martin's other qualities. She has always been interesting to listen to when she speaks. She is a lively person who I think has that healthy predilection which is now emerging in this chamber by our ladies to take on the male sex from time to time. I might say that this is a thoroughly sexist activity but I think it is one that on the whole is to be applauded. The Australian Democrats wish Senator Martin happiness in the future. I am not quite sure whether we have an Australian Democrat standing against her. In case we have, I will have to be careful about wishing her success. However I think she will have a stimulating time wherever she is. I am sure that she will take with her the same qualities that we have enjoyed here.
