Senator MESSNER —I give notice that, on the next day of sitting I shall move:

That the Senate-

(a) notes with approval the release of the Liberal and National Parties' social security policy, in particular:

(i) its commitment to repeal the Hawke Labor Government's assets test and lump sum superannuation legislation,

(ii) the restoration of the present system of income-tested and indexed pensions and a liberalisation of the income test for the Pensioner Health Benefit card,

(iii) its encouragement of occupational superannuation and personal savings as the only practical means of reducing long-term demands on government revenue by the ageing of the population, and

(iv) the fact that it would restore stability, security and predictability for those presently retired and those approaching retirement in contrast to the constant and savage attack they have been under from the Hawke Labor Government since its election; and

(b) notes that, but for the action of the Australian Democrats and the Australian Labor Party, the assets test legislation would not have passed Parliament and would not be coming into force on 21 March 1985.
